Pre-Operative Instructions
General Instructions
- Wear comfortable clothing
- Take regular daily medications unless instructed otherwise
- Be sure to take antibiotic premedication if required (Mitral valve prolapse, artificial heart valve, AV shunt etc.) If you are not sure, ask our office or contact your physician.
- If it is your first visit to our office, be sure that we are supplied a written referral to verify procedure to be performed, any previous x-ray (if available), current insurance information, and current medications. Please contact our office with questions.
- If you wish to sleep through the procedure, please review the following information regarding intravenous anesthesia.These will be reviewed during your consultation.
Preoperative instructions if you prefer IV anesthesia:
Thank you again for selecting Cary Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Center to provide your clinical and surgical care. Intravenous anesthesia is a very safe and extremely comfortable with virtually no memory of the procedure. To help us provide the absolute best treatment; we ask that you follow these very important preoperative and postoperative instructions.
- Please do not eat after midnight or at least 6 hours before your surgery. Sips of clear liquids may be taken up to 2 hours prior to surgery, unless directed otherwise by your surgeon. If you have anything to eat or drink, it is very important that you inform the doctor upon your arrival to the clinic. Eating or drinking prior to your surgery may cause your case to be rescheduled or cancelled.
- Daily medications may be taken with a minimal amount (sips) of water. Special instructions for diabetics taking insulin will be provided.
- Please wear loose-fitting clothing with short sleeves. This will allow placement of the required monitors without difficulty and provide more accurate diagnostic information during your anesthesia.
- Please do not wear any make-up or jewelry.
- Please visit the restroom immediately before your appointment time.
- You should not do the following for 24-hours after your sedation/anesthesia:
- Drive a motor vehicle
- Operate or work around machinery
- Make financial or significant personal decisions
- Drink alcohol
- You should plan on resting the remainder of the day following your surgery. Someone should be available to check on you throughout the remainder of the day or provide assistance at night if necessary
- A responsible adult must accompany you before your anesthesia or sedation can be started. That person must remain in the reception area during the appointment and is responsible for driving the patient home after release from the clinic.
- Patients under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at the time of surgery.
- If you develop symptoms of a chest or head cold, please contact us prior to your appointment.
